Go West, Young Artist

Iowa, 1870
Iowa has been a state for 24 years. It is no longer the wild western frontier. Farms and towns have sprouted throughout the state. Iowa is what the frontier is destined to become.

Andrew Melrose is a painter and an etcher of the landscapes of America and Europe. You find him in Iowa, where he has just completed an important landscape painting commemorating the arrival of the railroad in 1869.

"Good day, laddie! M'name is Andrew Melrose. I hear you want to learn something about painting landscapes. You're going about it the right way: see the world, try your hand, and ask questions. No need for fancy schools."

"I'm planning to go to art school—didn't you?"

"Och, no! I taught myself to paint. I've been all around Europe and America and seen the most wondrous of places. I came over from Scotland just before the Civil War—aye, there's plenty of fine wilderness in this country. At least for the time being, mind you! Iowa tisn't as grand as lands farther west, but the stories are mighty interesting! There's plenty here for a Romantic like myself to paint!"
