| The Grand Canyon, Arizona
Territory, 1872. White explorers
first came upon this canyon of the Colorado river in the 1500s.
But Americans ignored it for centuries, seeing it merely as a useless
hole in the ground. Then, in 1869, explorer John Wesley Powell made
the first journey through the Canyon on the Colorado River. He wrote
a riveting account of the expedition and turned the nations
eyes to the canyon. Suddenly it was not useless, but majestic! It
had become the Grand Canyon! |
"Morning,
chap! I hear you're looking for me. I'm W.H.
Holmes. You must be tired. After all, the Grand Canyon is mighty
big.
I imagine it took some effort to find me!
"So you want to be an artist.... It was just a few years
ago that I studied to be an artist, but I now combine my artistic inclinations
with other interests of minegeology, archaeology, and anthropology."
I want to go to art school!
Where
did you study?
