Frederick Edwin Church
(1826-1900)
As
a pupil of Thomas Cole, Church carried on the tenets
of the Hudson River School while creating spectacular
paintings of landscapes in America and beyond. His most famous paintings depict
South American forests, glaciers and volcanoes as well as Niagra Falls and other
American scenes. He became immensely famous at the height of his popularity
in the 1850s and 1860s. His house, Olana, on the Hudson River, is now a museum.
