Thomas Cole (1801-1848)
Thomas
Cole is considered the father of the Hudson River School.
As an important American Romantic artist of
the early 1800s, he helped landscape painting become a respected movement in
American art. Born in England, he immigrated to the United States at age 17
to study art. As an artist, he won great praise and many patrons who supported
his work. His works show the American landscape as a meeting place of nature's
grandeur and the civilization's harmonious co-existence with the wilderness.
