Judith Leyster
Judith
Leyster (1609-1660) was a Dutch painter in the 17th century. By the age of nineteen,
she was a successful artist. She was a student of Frans Hals, and for many years
her works were thought to be by Hals. In her paintings, she emphasized bright
colors and well-lit scenes.
Leyster was mainly a genre painter, which means she painted everyday scenes (like this musician) rather than historical or religious subjects. She also painted portraits, still-lifes, and flowers. She began teaching young artists in 1635, and had a great influence on Johannes Vermeer and other Dutch artists.
